Inflammation of the muscles in the neck, back, chest, shoulders, or hip is called myositis in medicine. With the development of this disease, one or several muscles are affected at once. Nodules form in the muscle tissue, and this in turn leads to pain. If you do not start to treat inflammation in time, then muscle myositis will go into a chronic stage.
It happens that the disease spreads to one (locally) or several muscle groups (polymyositis). The disease can develop in acute and chronic forms. Acute, as a rule, appears spontaneously, abruptly, in particular, after injury or after intense physical exertion. If you do not start the treatment course on time, then the stage becomes chronic and periodically makes itself felt with pain. They manifest themselves with severe hypothermia, changes in weather, and prolonged exertion.
Symptoms of the disease
- soreness in the cervical region, radiates to the back of the head, frontal area, ears, shoulders;
- pain in the chest, lower back, back, leg muscles;
- pain syndrome becomes stronger during movement or when feeling, outdoors in cold weather;
- pains do not calm down even after rest, a person constantly experiences them at rest;
- swelling is formed, muscle tissue becomes denser, tense;
- when probing, you can observe nodules inside;
- the head hardly turns to the sides, it hurts to straighten and bend;
- the local temperature rises, there is swelling, local redness;
- muscle weakness, they can atrophy.
Treatment, for example, of cervical myositis, will depend on the symptoms. And the earlier it starts, the less the risk of complications will be.
Why does the disease occur
The disease develops for the following reasons:
- injury;
- severe muscle cramps;
- severe hypothermia;
- constant physical activity;
- violation of metabolic processes inside;
- diabetes;
- padagra, lupus erythematosus;
- osteochondrosis, scoliosis, arthritis;
- heredity.
The back muscle tissue becomes inflamed as a result of:
- colds (flu, SARS, tonsillitis, tonsillitis);
- development of rheumatism.
In addition, inflammation of the muscles of the neck and back can develop due to the penetration of infections of a bacterial and fungal nature, parasites, immune disorders, exposure to toxins. If an infection gets into an open wound, or an intramuscular injection was made incorrectly, then there is a high risk of pus.
Most often, this disease affects people who are constantly in the same position in which the same muscle group is strained. These are programmers, office workers, violinists, pianists, drivers.
Views
- Cervical myositis is the most common form. Most often it develops due to colds, severe physical loads. The pain is felt on one side of the neck, it is impossible to turn the head to the side;
- Dorsal - the pain is felt in the lumbar region, has an aching character. Even at rest, it does not go away, it becomes strong during movement and when feeling the lower back. Often, the inflammatory process occurs during pregnancy, because the load on the back at this time is large;
- Pectoral - here the muscle intercostal tissue becomes inflamed. It's getting hard to breathe. Symptoms are similar to intercostal neuralgia;
- Infectious - develops as a result of the penetration of enterovirus infections, the development of tuberculosis, syphilis, influenza. The main symptoms are pain and weakness. May turn into purulent;
- Ossifying - affects the hips, shoulders, buttocks. Most often appears after injuries. The muscle tissue becomes dense, atrophies;
- Polymyositis is a severe form. Several muscle groups are affected here at once. She is characterized by severe pain and weakness.
Why is muscle inflammation dangerous?
- With the inflammatory process, muscle tissue weakness develops.
- The patient can hardly climb stairs, walk, get out of bed, dress, etc.
- Further progression of the disease affects the state of health. It becomes more and more difficult to lift your head from the pillow, you have to keep it upright all the time.
- In addition, inflammation can spread to other muscle groups. The danger of cervical myositis is that it affects the tissue of the pharynx, larynx and esophagus.
- When swallowing, pain is felt, coughing, muscle atrophy, shortness of breath appear.
Treatment for cervical myositis depends on the symptoms. If this disease is not treated in time, atrophy will occur and then weakness will remain until the end of life.
Diagnostics
The symptomatology of the disease is very similar to osteochondrosis, because it also causes pain in the back and neck. Kidney disease can also produce aching pains, felt in the lumbar region. To make the correct diagnosis, you need to see a doctor and undergo a full examination.
- The examination begins with a survey, examination and palpation of the patient.
- An electromyography is also done, which shows the condition of the skeletal muscles, blood and urine tests are taken.
How myositis is treated: methods
Treatment tactics depend on the etiology of the disease, symptoms, its form and type. The treatment course is prescribed individually, taking into account the age of the patient, the characteristics of his body.
- The disease is inflammatory in nature, so the doctor must prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs.
- If there is pus or infection, antibiotics are prescribed.
- If the cause is an autoimmune disorder, the doctor prescribes high dosage corticosteroid medications.
- If necessary, antiparasitic drugs and serums are prescribed.
- Symptomatic therapy is mandatory. The doctor prescribes pain relievers and vascular agents. In the acute form, the patient must observe the recumbent regime and rest, no physical exertion.
Treatment of myositis of the back muscles is longer in time, the course is 3-6 weeks.
The course may include the following procedures:
- Hirudotherapy - hirudin enters the bloodstream, due to which edema is removed, the walls of blood vessels are strengthened, blood circulation is normalized;
- Acupuncture - needles act on biologically active points. With this procedure, pain, inflammation, vascular spasms disappear, tissue nutrition is normalized;
- Kinesiotherapy is medical gymnastics. Helps relieve pain, normalizes pressure, metabolism, joint mobility;
- Massage - kneading, rubbing is done. The procedure relieves pain and tension, eliminates pain in the head, straightens posture.
Comprehensive treatment of the disease helps to relieve inflammation, eliminate pain, improve health, strengthen muscle tone, normalize blood circulation and pressure, and strengthen immunity. You can treat myositis at home. Do special gymnastics to consolidate the effect.
It is equally important to eat right, follow a diet. Give up everything fatty and spicy. Include in the diet vitamins, vegetables, vegetable oil, fruits, lemons, lean meat, fish, dairy products, nuts, berries, eggs, liver cheese. Drink 1, 5 liters of water a day, you can broth rose hips, green tea, dried fruit compote.
Treatment of cervical myositis at home can be done with dry heat. Tie a sore spot with a warm woolen scarf. Physiotherapy will do. You can gently massage your neck yourself, stroke and rub it. To do this, you can use the essential oil of lavender, eucalyptus or marjoram in a heated form and diluted with water.
Prevention measures
- Try not to overcool, dress for the weather.
- Avoid drafts, cold, injuries, strong physical exertion.
- You should not sit on metal and cold benches or concrete. It is also undesirable to sit with your back to the window.
- It is impossible to carry diseases on the legs that are infectious in nature. Treat flu, SARS, sore throat, etc. in time.
- It is good to go in for sports - swimming, yoga, cycling, skating.
- Be sure to take breaks from work if you sit in one position for a long time. Bend in both directions, move your shoulders in a circle.
Muscle inflammation is treatable if started early. Otherwise, you run the risk of earning complications in the form of muscle atrophy, in which muscle tissue becomes weak and movements are slow and painful.
